Daytripping - Wentworth Castle and Gardens

I have to admit that I hadn't heard of Wentworth Castle near Barnsley until a couple of weeks ago. A customer at the Market Garden visits regularly and was telling me all about how wonderful it was and how much I would like it. He wasn't wrong as it's absolutely stunning and worth the entrance fee alone to see the Dahlias still in bloom. Set in 500 acres of parkland, there are woodland trails, a deer park, follies and stunning views of South Yorkshire.

We spent some time following the spooky trail out in the gardens, including a climb up the high tower in the mock castle. We found plenty of conkers and pine cones  and finally completed our Scavenger hunt!

The cafe was good  and we indulged in lattes and chocolate tiffin. The adventure playground is brilliant, with a huge fort to explore. I always feel as a family of two adults and one child we never get any discounted tickets, but at Wentworth Castle they do a Family of Three ticket, so that was another big bonus for us.

There was a fantastic range of events for Halloween on for all age groups including an evening spooky tour of the gardens, a drive-in movie showing of Psycho and lots of arts and crafts. There is so much to see and do and you could easily spend a whole day there exploring, but as the rain fell all morning, we got absolutely drenched and had that cold, damp, we just need to go home and put the heating on kind of a feeling! We're planning a return trip soon to see more of the parkland. And I'm now thinking about growing some of those dahlias next year as they are just too magnificent. x
